"When are you chatting with the band?" a message arrives. "My request was to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also longs to be the Haims' fourth member. Furthermore, we are far from alone. A host of famous admirers have openly petitioned for the honor.

It's clear something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the most iconic bands, they're a tight-knit gang. Their music videos often feature them marching in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the greatest honor. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate people to form a group."

"So everyone are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Recognition

The band are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the honor isn't lost on the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," continues Alana. "But we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record was born from a time of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that odd transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The words detail breakups and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them working out in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to make an effort in ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Sound

That developed toughness called for a different sonic direction – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal misadventures.

A former partner ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Legacy

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an worldwide fan base.

Yet Haim will always be their number one focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," shares Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still making music."
